explode into colors
Last night, my friend Sheena played me this band that she’d been listening to on repeat (not this one, but this story will make sense, trust me) Anyway, she was playing these songs while describing how much they meant to her and just how in awe she was of these sounds that were anxious and soothing and magical. I loved the way she described it. It reminded me why we love music so much, and the likelihood that we could get attached to the music-makers, in a sometimes, high school crush kinda way. (The singer of said band was looking to buy her guitar that she’d just put on Craigslist- she then considered just giving it to him, to which I responded- noo!!).
When I heard Explode Into Colors, I felt like Sheena could’ve added this to her rhythmic, meditative mix. They’ve got this sound that’s been described as, “feminist afro punk” which, I could understand, although I hate the word feminist. What about music-ist, I think we can all pledge allegiance to that interest group. It’s heavy on pulsing instrumentation, hypnotic percussion, fuzzed out whaling vocals and lo fi recordings, I’m super into it!
