Best Coast :: Debut LP Crazy For You

Best Coast’s debut LP ‘Crazy for You’ is out July 27 via Mexican Summer and boy, will you be pleased. She’s got an unhealthy love for her cat Snacks, California and plays washed out beachy pop, so I’m advocating for our future friendship. Let me know, Bethany. Anyway, This 14 track wonder is perfect, each song is short and sweet, packaged in echoey vocals and fuzzy guitars. She sings about love and the sun, but she’s far from the dumb daisy duke California girl bullshit that is so Kelly Kapowski. She’s a bit bratty, a bit bold, but reveals her softer, feminine side singing, “everytime you leave this house, everything falls apart”. One of my favorite tracks is All Summer, a track for Converse by Best Coast, Kid Cudi and Rostam Batmanglij- not on the record, but you can d/l it below.

The season of summer is so teenager. That’s what this record makes me feel like. “There’s something about the summer” describes just that. You just want a boyfriend because the summer brings it out of you. My friend Andrea and I know the curse of summer all too well. So as I await for her arrival on my back porch for us to drink beer in the brutal heat we’ll be blasting this record in defiance of my Guido neighbours. Take THAT World Cup assholes!

Best Coast :: Boyfriend [mp3]

Best Coast’s new track ‘Boyfriend’ has just been released in anticipation of their debut ‘Crazy For You’ out on Mexican Summer on July 27th. This is the longest, slowest build for a debut (or it just feels that way, seeing as I was into ‘When I’m With You’ sometime last winter). So I hope it’s worth the hype, I already know we can expect the lofi pastel-y fifties pop stuff, so I won’t be disappointed.

I will, however, take the onslaught of California surfer music as subliminal messages. This song is sweet and filled with teenaged angsty longing, “the other girl is not like me, she’s prettier and skinnier…I wish he was my boyfriend”. To settle this, once you pass the impressionable age of 17, you will not be wishing he was ‘your boyfriend’.

Best Coast (Bethany Cosentino) has that fuzzy surf punk sound that has graduated her to a rightful citizen of the (best) West Coast. A former East coast girl, her transition has made an indelible mark on her soul- stretching her melodies in a breezy, lazy 50’s beach bum kind of way. I have 35 days until I return to California, all. 35 days. The song, ‘When I’m With You’ will be playing as I try on old bathing suits and sunglasses for the big move ahead. Let the countdown begin.
