these roads don’t move
Ben Gibbard and Jay Farrar of Son Volt will be releasing their collaborative project called, ‘One Fast Move or I’m Gone: Kerouac’s Big Sur’. The project is a soundtrack to a documentary on Kerouac’s Big Sur taking lyrics straight from the novel. They’ll be playing a 4-date tour in support of this with the accompaniment of Nick Harmer (Death Cab), Jon Wurster (Superchunk, Bob Mould, The Mountain Goats, and Mark Spencer (Son Volt).
Big Sur was Kerouac’s landmark 1962 novel, and “ is an evocative account of a time in Jack’s life when he’d “come undone,” both emotionally and spiritually. He escapes to a cabin in Big Sur to confront his inner demons and find a modicum of peace by the sea.”
My favorite track is ‘California Zephyr’ because it’s so classically Kerouac, and fits perfectly with Gibbard’s soft and articulate vocals singing, ‘now I’m transcontinental 3000 miles from my home, I’m on the California Zephyr, watching America roll by’.
