My friend Andrea recently introduced me to an LA band called Dylan Trees and like all things Andrea likes- I immediately fall in love with. In fact, one day I’m going to just lie and say I don’t like it to spite her. She’s designed things for the band (exhibit A, above) and has been telling me how much she really loves their stuff. They’ve got a folksy sound made up of singer songwriter Jeremy Simon, Monica Olive (vocals), Geoff Anderson (drums) and Ryan Workman (bass).
Their sound is a cross between Brit pop and California indie- a mark of a true LA band- where no one is really ever from LA. Their self-titled sophomore record is pretty spectacular. It’s lazy summer listening, it eases along at a slow pace that sounds like nostalgia, like you’re listening to 6os’ psycho folk, driving in your car at night, nearly about to drift to sleep. There are also moments that are playful and sweet, like with tracks like, “Perpetual Motion” and “Elegies”. The male/female harmonies blend seamlessly together, like two young people, in love.
Check them out at their show at the Silverlake Lounge on August 3rd! Andrea will most likely be there.
