Beirut :: The Rip Tide

Nada Alic

Beirut‘s third LP titled “The Rip Tide” will be released August 30th via Zach Condon’s label Pompeii Records. This is decidedly more of a pop record. It’s the most accessible, while maintaining that unique Beirut sound. Trumpets, drums, organs- all lending to that Balkan/Jazz/Waltz kind of sound. Tracks like “Santa Fe” have a Sufjan Stevens “All Delighted People” with a little more of that 80′s pop synth quality.

The first release “East Harlem” has that anthem-feel, with the regal elegance trumpets and beautiful harmonies- it breaks with a round about, “and the sound of your breath in the cold/  and oh the sound will bring me home, again”. The b-side “Goshen” is a piano ballad — one of the few slow paced tracks, that builds and builds with marching-band drums. Payne’s Bay is one of my favorite tracks- the repetition of “headstrong today, I’ve been headstrong” grows and leaps with volume and altering harmonies. The whole album still has that majestic sound- somehow both classic and progressive.
