The Mixtape Series Presents: Andy Hull [Mix 17]

After a mini hiatus, the Mixtape Series is back, with a few more on their way. With this seventeenth mix, I’m just a few members shy of everyone in the Favorite Gentlemen camp contributing their mixes, it seems. This one came easiest, Andy  Hull asked if he could make me a mix after one of his shows in LA a while back, and we continued to discuss the validity of that statement, as I was sure he’d soon after forget. But voila, he delivered not one, but two mixes for me, in fine form.

Some interesting obervations on receiving a mix from Andy Hull- frontmen of bands like Manchester Orchestra, Bad Books and Right Away Great Captain- he’s such a prolific young songwriter, who writes the kind of lyrics only seen, felt and understood by a man three times his age. He’s felt life so vividly that it wears on him, so much so that he’s got several different projects, drains, each one of them- for his own leaky faucet. You’d have to wonder what music moves him in his quiet spaces- in the back of vans for 12 hour drives, what sustains him.

His mixes are entitled 17/18- and they’re songs that had changed his spiritual landscape during the age of 17-18.  That’s about the time when you painstakingly release all of the truths your parents taught you about the world and how it works, and you blindly go forth, searching for something that sounds like it could be something real. Often, you return with remnants, words and pieces that still made some sense from when you were a kid. His gospel came in the form of Son House, Pedro the Lion, Gillian Welch and Nick Drake. And it’s with great pleasure that I share them with you. Thanks Andy!
