Last night we went to the screening of the film Flood Tide: Remixed scored by a live band called Dark Dark Dark. The Minneapolis-based band was also featured in the film that tells the story of four musicians who craft extraordinary boats out of whatever junk they can find and set out for open water. We were lucky enough to catch them during their first of two performances at MCASD and were completely blown away by the combination of live music played to a gorgeously shot film- the whole thing seemed so organic that we often forgot the band was playing live.

Blurring the line between fact and fiction, Flood Tide was shot on the Hudson River during the real-life art-raft project The Swimming Cities of Switchback Sea, a concept dreamed-up by the artist Swoon and built by an eclectic group of artists and performers. In the summer of 2008, the crew built and floated seven large, boat-sculptures down the Hudson River. They screened only at a small handful of locations, with a musical score composed and performed live on stage by the band and film cast members Dark, Dark, Dark.

The band Dark Dark Dark combines all the best elements of classical music: piano, upright bass, drums with accordians and sweeping vocals of front woman Nona Marie. There is something penetrating about Nona, her raw expression of “unspeakable things” is something we can understand, she invites into these ‘dark dark dark’ spaces and we sit and watch her play. Their enigmatic performance complimented the film perfectly. It was very apparent that they were prepared to reveal it all, comfortable in all the things that make us uncomfortable- all matters of the heart. Whether they’re sleeping on top of one another on a raft headed towards the end of the horizon or if they’re playing a grand piano, fixing their glasses and strapping on their accordians- they’re still baring it all. In the song, “Daydreaming” she sings, “and oh if you knew what it meant to me” with a childlike wonder that everything is magnified, everything is important. Building, creating, confessing, it’s all life-or-death. It all needs to be done. Confronting every dark thing and peeling away at it, diving right into it. The idea of wading in dark waters, shattering the surface to get into the depths of it all.
