I’m not sure what it is, but I’ve befriended many preacher’s sons over the years. Some, categorically Christian, theologically sound- the kind that tuck their collared shirts into their pants, while others- completely wild and suspiciously raucous.

I would put this Fullerton band of the same name in the former, in the best possible way. Two brothers- Brandon and Jeremy Pfaff play the kind of Americana and folk that takes a breath and eases you in. With their record ‘Looks Like a Flood, Feels Like a Drought’ they sing with a certain acquired wisdom only purchased with a life’s worth of heartache and perhaps a few calloused fingers from honest work. My friend Jared also plays in this band, among many other very-cool things that he does, like his job as one of the coolest teachers I never had. Other members include Matt Barrios (bass) and with good company of friends’ bands Francisco the Man, The Fling and Kissing Cousins never far off- my repetitive sentiment that there is something pretty sacred and spectacualr about Long Beach’s music community continues to hold true. PS- Long Beach, I miss you.

Playing that kind of classic and simple rock and folk is not easy feat, it’s easily tired and overdone, but to do it in a way that still feel timeless, like it’s still got some blood in it’s limbs, that’s difficult. Preacher’s Sons somehow organically find their own voice, with an elegance that is unmatched. They’re not trying to be anyone other than themselves.

This is a fitting autumn album, at least if you’re still kicking around the North East like I am (did I mention six more weeks until California?) Anyway, I’ll be listening to this as I carefully watch all the trees out my window die with dignity, and the in a blazing mess of every burnt and fiery colour you could imagine. Fall goes out like a firecracker, leaving it’s mark, not to be forgotten up here.
