Deerhunter // Halcyon Digest
The new . WOW. wow. I hesitate to use such juvenile caps lock- but forgive me, this record is sublime. Halcyon Digest, to be released September 28th is the closest thing to perfect this band has ever gotten. And perfect, what is that? Well, for myself, it’s the way a band makes me feel. Atlas Sound was something of a soundtrack for my autumn season of last year, so Bradford Cox’s voice swimming above the biting air and crisp clear blue skies is definitely a welcoming feeling. It feels almost cyclical, new record of new songs, and myself, a new (older/wiser) person. I should hope. There’s just something whimsical about these tracks, there’s more of that feel-good pop, mixed with that psychedellic ambience and general weirdness of their sound. The track Coronado (hello, San Diego) has some gorgeous trumpets, and tracks like ‘Basement Scene’ or ‘Sailing’ really just showcase Cox’s stripped down vocals, without all the distortion and echoes. Just him and his beautiful, peculiar voice. It’s gonna be a good season, I can feel it.
