I first saw The Fling in Long Beach earlier this year and I was supremely impressed by their set. I don’t know why more people don’t know about these guys, Long Beach is something of an untapped wealth of great music that largely, and unfairly, stays within it’s own confines. I hope that’s not the case for this band, because I was just sent their latest album and it’s brilliant.
Obvious comparisons are drawn to (The Band, Beach Boys, Beatles etc) and more contemporary independent acts like Fruit Bats and Ha Ha Tonka; infusing folk, pop, and psychedelic rock, but more modern and progressive.
They have some beautiful harmonies with tracks like ‘Nothing Makes Sense’ but my favorite track has to be ‘Wanderingfoot’, it’s got a gorgeous melody with a classic 60s rock & roll sound. Another stand-out track is ‘Friend of Mine’. This is one of those records required for late summer drives, to me, it conjures up shirtless dudes, beer and country roads. Ah, the perfect date. What? It’s my fantasy, leave me alone.
To all my San Diego friends, The Fling is playing Soda Bar on July 10th, so that’s where you’ll be going. The album will be out August 31st with a release show on the 27th at Spaceland.
