Alright, so a reflection of my age would be that I experienced very real pangs of nostalgia yesterday evening thanks to the band Thrice, a band who I first heard at my very first Warped Tour, while finding myself at their shows over the years through my work with Invisible Children. Watching them evolve as a band while still in my formative years made them consistently relevant, they emerged from their Warped tour post-hardcore aggression and found their voice, sonically- as experimental rock music, expansive and intricate- but with the weight of Thrice’s powerhouse instrumentation.

I am a fan, which may not conform with the kind of music I regularly post about on here, but I resonate with those kinds of bands much deeper than any chillwave mixtape you hand me. There is a history- one that includes my subjective journey alongside it, thats when you return to the MUSIC, and what music really means. I thought about this last night while watching them- it’s not about being cool, or knowing the hippest shit, because it’s going to be old news next week. It’s about being physically electrified by the sounds of a song you used to play in your car, and thinking about where you were and who you were at that time. That’s music. It’s an infinite community. It requires the use of your arms, legs and voice (if only to mouth or hum all the words). I actually forgot about the songs until they played them and it all came back to me.

That being said, my friend Kevin Devine who is also on the tour played a gorgeous set with his Goddamn band- his first song, ‘Brother’s Blood’ just ruined me. He’s one of the finest songwriters I know, and I’m exceedingly impressed by his stage presence. I hold a great affection for the eerie narratives of his songs and how they allude to big, weighty concepts that he delivers with an easy accessbility. Before him was Bad Veins, a two man band that uses keyboards, drums, a guitar, and fuzzy vocals to make some of the most perfect, percussion-driven pop songs I’ve heard in a long while. Might I mention that Andrea loved the drummer’s extraordinary enthusiams while playing (he just seemed really really stoked). The first to open was The Dig, a band that Joey Bradford urged me to go watch, and I was not disappointed. They were a real pleasure to watch, and set a good vibe to kick the night off with.

Let it be known that there is a back catalogue in my brain of some really old nineties emo/post-hardcore music that I will keep with me until I die, I won’t deny my past, I will embrace the soundtrack of my youth into the depths of my elderly years. And it will be wonderful.
