flesh of my own flesh

Nada Alic

Columbia student Austin Crane decided to produce an entire album based off of the Book of Genesis for his senior thesis project under the name Valley Maker. A far cry from my senior thesis paper about emergent Christian movements back in the day. And what a project! I would hardly categorize it as Christian music because it is something much more divine than that, it speaks to your gut and your goosebumps and to the insides of your eyelids at night. It moves you. The first few seconds of the track ‘Jacob’ just ruined me, I haven’t heard anything like this in a long while. Soul-shattering stuff, you know? There is a gorgeous pain in his voice, when he sings, “you met a good wife, in seven years she would come true, flesh of my own flesh, blood of my blood, what did you do?” It reveals the heaviness behind these narratives, the birth of all things- of existence, like the wrestling words of David Bazan, and Sufjan Stevens.

As an open letter to anyone reading my blog, I urge you to purchase this album via www.valleymaker.com. It’s an unknown gem, and I undoubtedly know it will reach far more ears soon. It’s a pure joy to listen to. Oh that voice, that voice, have you heard anything like it? It’s absolutely serene.
