see it on your skin

I have been waiting for this album for too long. Colour Revolt is alive again! Thank God. I never get excited for releases as I do for this very one. Plunder, Beg and Curse was an absolute genius album that went unrecognized. I always categorized them with the same magic and wonder of Neutral Milk Hotel, thematically spiritual and strikingly sad. They’ve released a new track, and it is amazing, the lyrics are expectedly deep, “read out every line, and swallow what you find”.  I’m really excited to share this one with you guys. The album is called ‘The Cradle’ and it’s out Aug. 10th.. I’m impatiently anticipating it. Listen to the track below!

Monster Rally [free ep]

Ahh, what a wonderfully free EP by Monster Rally. Today I had the pleasure of going to the beach with my two good friends, up in Sauble- and Lord, was it ever hot. Too hot, in fact, that we had to leave soonafter for fear of cancerous rays piercing our already sore skin. How is it that Canada is more pleasant than California right now? In your face, is my response. Anyhow, this was a really lovely EP to come home to, I’ve been listening to it while sipping on fruity drinks, awaiting the loungy days ahead. Hello, summer.

Burn Until The End

cate

Is there anything more lovely than Cate Le Bon? I’m sure your first comparisons draw on the legendary Nico, and thank God there are more musicians like her. I think there is something so perfectly original about her, anyway.

It’s not easy to craft a simple song, and she does so, with some of the most heartbreaking lyrics. She articulates them clearly, however hard- she brings them to light.

Me Oh My is a record I was sent just the other day, but the songs have found their way into my head so much so that they all bear their own familiarity, they seem old and worn by now, an element possessed by only my most treasured albums. She is a classic.

Burn Until The End is hands-down my favorite, as she repeats, “I want to burn until the end” It’s a haunting, strumming psych-folk anthem that possesses some of the boldest words a woman could say. May we all have the good fortune of burning until the end.

brothertiger

Nakhla suggested this one to me in one of her many sneaky offline gchats. I always know I get a treat every time I open it. GOD I miss that girl, I couldn’t count the ways I am eternally and fatally in love with the Andreas in my life (on both coasts). Have you guys checked out andreantoinette.com? Do it. BROTHERTIGER is an electronic/shoegaze project from Athens, Ohio. Check out these jams off his Vision Tunnels EP. Heyo..

I’m already yours

Ahh, I’ve arrived in Toronto. And Lord, it is sweet. My family is perfect, and familiar. Everything is wonderful. New season, let’s get to it!

So I came across Bahamas, another case of Northern cabin recordings, but I suppose I’m a bit late on this one- it was recorded in 2008. Gimme a break, I just got back in town. Anyhow, I’d love to share this with you guys, his songs are very sweet. He comes from the Jason Collett and Feist camp, so expect to hear traces of that lovely folk rock simplicity.

doesn’t get better than home

I’m late for my flight to Toronto, so I must be quick. But I’m headed back home, although California seems much more like home these days. Farewell to my favorite state, I’m either returning in a week, or a few months. We’ll see.

we barbarians [new video]

My friend David works on a ton of sweet music videos for artists like Yeasayer etc. He just finished working on this one by We Barbarians for their song ‘There’s This There’s That’. The formula for a good music video seems to be, find a hot babe with limited clothing in slow motion, it’s art if it’s in black and white. Either way, I’m into it. It’s quite beautiful. Check out Long Beach Film Company‘s site for more sweet videos.

hallelujah, I’m a bum

You know, although this space is a little quiet, or, just not updated as frequently this passed week- my life has been consumed by music. I am moving out of San Diego, so that means everyone I ever knew gets a mixtape. I know, right? I’m such a pal. But the mixtape process takes forever, especially when it comes to personalizing them, and cutting and pasting the album artwork, tracklist and letters inside. Whew.. But it’s been fun, and bitersweet. In the midst of all this, I’ve come across some epic music that I will eventually share with you all. But for now, I’m excited to tell you about Daniel, Fred and Julie- a collaborative effort of three amazing Canadian artists, hailing from Attack in Black, Calm Down It’s Monday, Shotgun, Jaybird and the wonderfully talented- Julie Doiron. They crafted these simple and narrative folk songs about “loafing, complaining, horses, murder, romance” you know.. the usual. Alright Canada, I’m coming home if you will have me.
