The new She & Him record ‘Vol. 2′ is, in my opinion, sharply better than their debut. Zooey Deschanel is a joy to listen to and it sounds like she’s got her bearings, she sounds a lot more confident and she’s got a lot more sass. She sings of stories of heartache, and breakups, sun and stars and shoes. It’s sweet and soft and it’s got a lot more flow than Vol. 1. I love her Skeeter Davis cover of ‘Gonna Get Along Without You Now’ with a heavy dose of ahas and mhmms. ’If You Cant Sleep’ sounds like a sweet lullaby that sounds safe and maternal, with a chorus of humming voices in the background. The whole album is a concise collection of pop songs that showcases Deschanel’s mature songwriting, arrangements and exceeding coolness. One of my favorites.
