bandwelove: Phantogram

Nada Alic

Yesterday I was in San Diego with some friends and they suggested we go to a record store in Hillcrest to check out some band called Phantogram. They were so. so. good. You guys, am I late on this one? How have I not heard about them before?

Guitarist Josh Carter and keyboardist Sarah Barthel are of the ‘psych pop’ breed, the ambience and electronically fused futuristic sounds accompanied by the gorgeous vocals of Barthel who sways meditatively with thick black bangs to a drum machine. It’s easy to listen to, mellow with moments of distortion, combined with layered echoes that build throughout the song, as if they’re crafting the song as they go. This requires precision and they seemed to do it so organically. Below is an acoustic version of ‘When I’m Small’. Thanks Andrea [Nakhla] for showing me this, AND for making me the worlds.best.mix.
