you like videos? I like videos.

The theme of the day is: KIDS.

Check out Sunset Rubdown’s Video for Dragon’s Lair, it’s the most magnificent piece of musical cinema I’ve ever seen. Well, it’s up there. It reminds me of that Sigur Ros video, doesn’t it? The visuals are gorgeous.

annuals:: sweet sister

New Annuals EP entitled ‘Sweet Sister’ is out today. I’m pretty excited about it, they’re one of the most original and experimental indie acts out there. Ever since I first heard the track ‘The Man in My Wall’ I knew this band was different.  And the track ‘Brother’ was gorgeous and sweeping, covered beautifully by Manchester Orchestra as well. Their sophmore album Such Fun back in ’08 was one of my favorites, they’ve always maintained this childlike quality that makes me feel like watching Disney films. Their expansive sound is soft and majestic, conjuring up images of running through vast green pastures and mountaintops. ‘Hollar and Howl’ seems fitting for just that.

Save Skeletal Lightning

IMG_1661

Hi friends, Nada here- I need your help. So as I’ve mentioned, I’ve been riding around in a pretty sweet ride called Skeletal Lightning. I’ve been borrowing my friend’s car while he’s working in Africa. Here’s the thing, last night the car died on the freeway- it made a grand exit off the 405 S, somewhere in Huntington en route back to San Diego. The whole thing was pretty nuts, I ended up having to tow it back to San Diego and now it’s sadly parked, and lifeless outside of my house.

Skeletal is not just a car, it’s apart of a greater community of cyclists in San Diego. The Skeletal Lightning San Diego bike crew is made up of over a dozen, largely fixed gear bikers that have an unhealthy amount of pride for their crew and bicycles. So much so that they’ve tagged Skeletal everywhere- on sidewalks, tattooed on their arms, and they’ve got a growing following at the San Diego Critical Mass rides. They’re a friendly, inclusive group rooted in the Invisible Children community and beyond. This car is their mascot, it is the way they can reach the freeways of the greater part of Southern California to spread the love.

This car can be fixed before David gets home but it needs. your. love. We are trying to raise $1200 for repairs. Please help us.

So help a girl out, and hey- hit me up either way and tell me your thoughts about our campaign, bikes, music, skulls- anything really. I want to hear from you!

band goes marching

Swedish based duo, Marching Band‘s second album ‘Pop Cycle’ is out in May. I first heard them last year with their song, ‘For Your Love’, and after giving this one a listen, the songs sound more of the same. But I wouldn’t say that’s a bad thing, who cares if all the songs are similar. It’s just really sweet indie-pop. I’m really into the tracks ‘It’s Not Your Dream [But His]‘ and ‘Okey’. It kind of sounds a little like Rogue Wave, Hot Chip and Nada Surf- except Swedish, got it? Cool.

gonna get along without you now

The new She & Him record ‘Vol. 2′ is, in my opinion, sharply better than their debut. Zooey Deschanel is a joy to listen to and it sounds like she’s got her bearings, she sounds a lot more confident and she’s got a lot more sass. She sings of stories of heartache, and breakups, sun and stars and shoes. It’s sweet and soft and it’s got a lot more flow than Vol. 1. I love her Skeeter Davis cover of ‘Gonna Get Along Without You Now’ with a heavy dose of ahas and mhmms.  ’If You Cant Sleep’ sounds like a sweet lullaby that sounds safe and maternal, with a chorus of humming voices in the background. The whole album is a concise collection of pop songs that showcases Deschanel’s mature songwriting, arrangements and exceeding coolness. One of my favorites.

honeybee

I love Mountain Man, and I’ve been hearing only great things about their performances at SXSW. I found this video where the girls cover a Tom Waits song and then go into Animal Tracks [this wasn't their SXSW performance, but stunning nonetheless]. It’s beautiful.
