Southern California band dudes. The most frightening breed. Almost always beautiful to some effect, almost always unaproachable, inaccessible, hiding behind vintage ray bans. Almost always looking pissed off. So much angst. But the sun is shining, so you’re allowed to smile.
(formerly The Muslims) hail from my second home- San Diego. But now, Los Angeles-by way of- San Diego. There’s a shuffling southern California surf punk scene that has been brewing underneath the tanned facade of a breezy beach town- straight outta The Outsiders, our generation of borrowed greaser hairstyles, oxford shoes and short-sleeved collars are the unlikely candidates to speak for the underdog. San Diego is the place of the moderate-to-overpriveleged class, so what place is it for a still-thriving punk scene? What on earth are these kids complaining about? Maybe it’s the doldrums of boredom, or growing up as a hard knock while the other SD kids get the world. There are a decent amount of drifters hanging out on the outskirts of Ocean Beach.
The Soft Pack seem more laid back, sounding like they’ve got little to prove. They’re just coasting and jamming and that’s alright with them. The words are dragged out, and drunk, it’s about doing in BECAUSE you don’t care. Does that sound backwards? Matt Lamkin seems to think up the words, say them and doesn’t leave any ‘sorrys’ along the way.
They’re playing a few shows with the last of the remaining punk brothers- Wavves, in San Diego on the 16th and LA on the 17th.
