Synesthesia

LadyHawke

Ladyhawke’s Canadian debut was this Thursday as the travelling circus that was the Perez Hilton tour made it’s stop at the Opera House. The show opened with the soulful megababe Anjulie as a quick replacement for the sudden disappearance of Norwegian fury- Ida Maria. I was moderately disappointed by Ida’s absense- I’d never seen her before, but I fell in love with her after ‘Oh My God’ and equally raging songs like ‘We’re All Going To Hell’. Interesting sidenote for Ross (since I know you’re reading this) Ida apparently has synethesia, where she can envision colours when she hears music. Unreal!

Anjoulie was followed by Woodhands who seemed to have the longest..set..ever. It was a constant stream of noise- I was, however, mesmerized by the drums. A Jeffrey-Staresque being galloped on stage soon after with sheer gold fabrics carelessly covering parts that always and absolutely should be covered. With raccoon-like eyes and sufficient ‘shut the fuck ups’ to the crowd, the set quickly turned into a bad trip from the Rocky Horror Picture Show. In between songs about diamonds being shoved in places, the Semi Precious Weapons frontman stole cameras and took photos down his own pants (what develops, I’m not sure). Although I understand this is the appeal of a glam-rock band, the excessiveness- the shock value, I try to remove myself from those situations while they’re happening. So for the rest of the set, we left. The fact that kind of music exists makes me inexplicably sad for the current state of music.

Finally, a meak Pip Brown- better known as Ladyhawke graced the stage. There is a class about her, with the ability to pull off and master 80′s-synth and rock without cheesing it up, and a disarming politeness about her, and dirty golden bangs,  the young Newzealander was badass without the attitude. That kind of girl is what is called a ‘unicorn’ ie- does not exist. Being the frontwoman of a band is a heavy task, especially for babely blondes, but she shared the stage perfectly with her very equally gorgeous bandmates. She’s got that Deborah Harry kind of stage presence, without much movement aside from the firm grip on her guitar and a shy smile. The night ended with ‘My Delirium’ followed shortly after by a swift escape before the half goth/hipster crowd ate me and Monika. To recap: Ladyhawke rules. Perez Hilton and his glam-rock descendents are likely not human.

It Feels So Unnatural

contra

So everyone is getting all worked up over Vampire Weekend‘s announcement for their sophmore album ‘Contra’ out January 12th 2010. With an album cover and track list including the much-anticipated first track ‘Horchata’ simply because of the name. Horchata is perhaps the grossest mix of milk with god-knows-what you could pair with a burrito. Anyway, here’s the tracklist, along with some old VW-related songs.

04. California English
05. Taxi Cab
06. Run

Pickin Up Speed

Monsters+of+FolkClockwise: Conor Oberst, Jim James, Mike Mogis and M. Ward. Monsters of Folk’s self titled LP is out Sept. 22nd, and with said monsters behind the project, with enough hype to set the bar just out of reach and an early glimpse of what to expect with their single, ‘Say Please’ I was anticipating nothing short of a masterpiece. From my first listens, it’s a soulful rootsy-country kind of folk. There’s that mystical, fable-like quality brought about by Oberst, and some really beautiful harmonies.

Favoured tracks include, ‘Temazcal’ a calming rhythmic track, ‘Whole Lotta Losin’ which is an up-tempo track, sharing vocal duties among all the members (although it has that dad-rock kind of feel). I still love ‘Say Please’ but that may be due to having spent the most time with it, but I’m in love with the line, ‘hold out your hand, darlin’ say please!’. They’ll be at Massey Hall Nov. 11th.

I wanna live it up

metric

photo: Justin Broadbent

Metric‘s Fantasies was likely one of my favourite albums of the year. I always loved Emily Haines, especially the stripped down acoustic Emily. The Emily and the Soft Skeleton, Emily. The piano heavy, vocals soft Emily. Her solo EP ‘What is Free to a Good Home’ and full-length, ‘Knives Don’t Have Your Back’ a few years back were both so saturated with sadness, haunted with Elliot Smith like-prose, ‘with all the luck you’ve had, why are your songs so sad?’ These excruciating and beautiful songs lead us into the depths of her- into the fears looming and wading beneath wisps of blonde covering a serious face.

I started re-listening to Emily sometime this past spring, I listened to the whole album from a morning drive from Birmingham back to Nashville something quite literally clicked in my head. Emily appears delicate, but she is ferocious in her writing. The intensity of her words laid over the sweetness of her melodies alludes to tension between all our attempts to divorce from femininity and embrace strength, to become a force- but there is something inescapable that leaves all our attempts in failure. It is only in the celebration of the softness and thoughtfulness that we are fully ourselves. Fragility in form can be deceiving, women still remain some of the most elusive creatures on this planet, we are simply unknowable.

I found this collection of acoustic Metric songs, the art of elimination leaves room for error and truth.

we’re all in the same spot

anthony green

Last night, my friends and I headed to the Horseshoe for Moneen‘s CD Release for their new album, ‘The World I Want To Leave Behind’. I watched the Junction and Anthony Green’s acoustic set- along with some other bands I didn’t really care for. The Junction wasn’t that bad, Anthony was wonderful. When he sings it shows on his face, he really feels the words- with the mildly psychotic eyeball rolls as if to over-dramaticize his great elation for each note. Or it just simply takes that kind of physical effort to pull off that intensity. Or he was likely high. He is a performer, he performs. I always saw him as more of a poet.

moneen_mastheadAs Moneen came on, the energy in the room manifest fully and entirely in the front- where bodies were thrown in every direction and gravity no longer operated in it’s normal manner. Limbs flew and faces reddened with nostalgia. Everyone in that room was suddenly, and very obviously seventeen- dressed in bodies of the twenty-something who long forgot how to dance to anything. I always love shows like that. Frontman- Kenny Bridges said he’d waited for that very moment- the revival of those songs, and what they meant to the ears that heard them at a time in their life.

Songs like, ‘Passing of America’, ‘Dont Ever Tell Locke What He Can’t Do’, and ‘Start Angry, End Mad’ were a few songs that made little boys of men- fists in the air, and testosterone thick in the walls. It’s always healthy to tap into those reserves, before hair greys and it’s all dried up. I get so excited for bands like Moneen because their hearts are contagious, they make everyone in the room want only good for them- they are a band that loves music, and loves the collective experience of it. They’ll be touring this fall with Say Anything and will be playing the Phoenix Oct. 28th.

It gets your body movin’

suckersThere’s something in the water in Brooklyn, NY. Perhaps that wouldn’t be such a stretch of a claim- there very well may be something in the water. Whatever the boys from Suckers are drinking, it comes out audibly- the dreamy acapellas, trumpets, and echoes of guitars and horns. There is something endearing about the fact that their appearance would suggest something entirely different. They, like most musicians look a little too-cool for school, with loose cigarettes hanging from their mouths- trumpets would seem like the last instrument they’d pick up. But their music is explosive, in that lovely way- when they say, ‘it gets your body movin’ it doesn’t seem contrived, it seems like the right thing to say.

There is a wave of more experimental sounds, mixing every decade and sound together to create a genetically-modified sound, where African drums and horns and whistles were never supposed to mix, but now they do and it opens us up to this new way of experiencing music. The torch, as it were, is carried by the MGMTs, Yeasayers, Animal Collectives, and the Suckers of the universe, and is now free to be held by anyone with a strange-enough idea for a sound. There is still something very traditional about it. Something nostalgic about the vocals. Maybe this wave will subside, and the future-meets-history sounds will evolve, but I think it’s quite telling of where we find ourselves in this world. Practicing different ways to dance in all the confusion.

Their single, ‘It Gets Your Body Moving’ is being released as a single in the UK on Oct. 5th, with a b-side called, ‘Out On The Water’. They’ll be playing at the Drake on October 24th with Titus Andronicus and White Rabbits.

when you grew up

l_631b3526f2d6e4edf4853e0e3b081f3f

Here’s another gem I found of a budding Bradford Cox of Deerhunter and Atlas Sound. Am I going too far with this? Anyway, I think he is adorable for too many reasons to name. Should you venture into his impressive photo album, you’ll find all the makings of a gawky teen, baring legs in shameless poses decked in costume or hanging from the ceiling. It is brilliant. He exudes the kind of confidence that transcends what his legs and arms would normally allow someone of his height and posture. He owns and uses his limbs, all of them. Uncool is a word still foreign to his ears. I am mildly in love with him.

Aside from that, with his solo project- Atlas Sound, he’s about to release his second full-length entitled ‘Logos’. This beautiful composition was recorded, ‘as a first take’ played live while the tape rolled. There’s a distinct sound of ‘no big deal’ about it, like, psh- doesn’t everyone record that way? No, Bradford, you have a mutant talent that allows for seamlessness to fall over what ever you may do.

He says that this album is more of a collaborative effort, instead of leaning towards his heavy introspection. I guess one can only stay inside the head for so long before no new ideas emerge, and exploration into the world outside would be required to massage those little brain cells back to life. Evident in ‘Walkabout’ ft. Noah Lennox (Panda Bear, Animal Collective), when he asks, “what did you want to be when you grew up?” Listen Bradford, that answer will get you nowhere fast. Everyone wants to be something magical. Then they realize there’s a real magic-deficit right about the time they’re about to ‘grow up’ so they wade in the magic for a few years longer. That has found us with an epidemic of children and beatnicks ruling the world. I suppose if that weren’t the case, we’d have a lot less music out there- it’s a trade for the dreamers. Logos is out Oct. 4th.

[baby] you the best

drakeAhahahahahahahahahaha.

I mean, here is a baby photo of Drake- you know, of the Degrassi: the Next Generation fame, oh and I guess he’s also some kind of massive hip hop star now. After careful examination of his baby photo, he was poised for fame- this kid is going somewhere! I’ve never seen a kid with a popped collar and cream suit. I’m going to dress my kids so insanely, and hopefully offend some people. My hypothetical kid is going to be a star.

Anyway Drake- don’t think we don’t remember you as that basketball playing guy in a wheelchair. I’m only guessing here, you know I never really watched that show. Anyway, his ‘Best I Ever Had’ song was huge this summer, acoustic covers were sure to follow. Here’s one that I really like by Donna, Anna & Ruby.

Enjoy!

the final frontier

sufjan

The project began as a “symphonic and cinematic exploration of New York City’s infamous Brooklyn-Queens Expressway”. The BQE included a film shot by Sufjan Stevens to the live soundtrack performance of an orchestra in November 2007 for three nights. The 30 minute (entirely instrumental) composition would find itself two years later in a multimedia package set to be released on October 20th, including the CD soundtrack, DVD of the film and a 40 page booklet with liner notes and booklets and a stereoscopic 3D View-Master reel.

Now play the tracks and close your eyes. The sun is resting on a sleepless city and the roads are cleared. The trumpets swell and shrink with the growing parade that lines the streets. The violins sing over the majesty of buildings ahead, and the chaotic flutter of birds. Sufjan guides your disney-like journey into the realms unknown and follows you safely home.

Below is a video from the project filmed by Reuben Kleiner and Sufjan Stevens. It’s the most beautiful thing you’ll set your eyes on today.
