As this project endures through it’s own growing pains, I’m still working out the knots, seeing what direction it will go, finding the rhythm, you know? First and foremost, I wanted to tell you about the music I’d been listening to this summer, with no specific structure. I’m thinking about putting together a weekly mix. Today I wanted to pull a congregation of artists and bands that would otherwise had not been friends (see: share the same blog space). I hope you enjoy!

Scribbler- is a manic-distorted folk rock project from Halifax that has a rather impressive collection of eccentric songs including a 29 track, avant-gard sound experience titiled “Scannopapia” (2005), an LP “Prussia” (2006) with some real songs on it , a death poem LP “Backitus” (2007) Scandopapia (2008) leading up to My Old Lady (2009 7” vinyl)

Headlights- This Champaign, Illinois band’s third and most recent album Wildlife is set to be released in October, and has been described as, “the transience of our friendships, lives, and aspirations. It is an album defined by moments like “Slow Down Town,” a hushed lament for lost youth, where Fein’s delicate vocals embrace all the vulnerability of adulthood, building into the most heartbreaking piece of Headlights’ catalog.” This album follows last year’s collection of remixes.

Free Energy- This band sounds like a rip-off of a band I can’t think of right now. But it sounds like one of those songs I’ve already heard before. Nevertheless, I’m admittedly into the song ‘free energy’ This Philadelphia  based band is signed to DFA Records of LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphey.

Generationals- This New Orleans band’s debut album Con Law is entirely positive, meshing modern sounds with more reminiscent sixties harmonies, horns and handclaps. The defining character of this band is that their sound is so eclectic, with a wide range of style over the whole album.

Now, Now Every Children- I heard this Brooklyn band a few months ago, but couldn’t seem to get my hands on their full length. I ended up getting around to it last week, and was pleased with the album in it’s entirety. There’s something youthful about the vocals, like a eight year old girl talking to her mother on the phone about all the things she did that day. There is something haunting and beautiful and timeless about it. The build up for ‘Friends with my sister’ is heartbreaking and beautiful.

Akron/Family- I heard this band floating around, but never got around to listening to them. They’re a folk- influenced experimental band from NY whose most recent album ‘Set Em Wild, Set Em Free’ released this past May was my first introduction to the band. This spring they toured with one of my favorite acts- the Dodos. They’re a breezy, seamless listen.
