I wonder how many times The Danks have been described as cute? Hailing from Charlottetown, PEI- a place of near obscurity, unidentifiable to most Canadians who only really recognize Ontario and British Columbia as valid provinces, these Tokyo Police Club counterparts have great potential despite their modest roots and (likewise) strange name. There exists an illogical bias attached to one’s geography, it’s near impossible to believe anything worthy can come from the desolate North, the Midwest states, or the boring in-between spaces spanning from coast to coast. As if all those born to such a fate could only anticipate factory hours, domestic restrain, or a swift exit plan. The fact remains that a healthy portion of good music resides in these dark places. The bored inhabitants aren’t sitting on their hands all day. They’re creating something in response to the nothing. And perhaps there’s something beyond the nothing that city-dwellers could never see. There’s a potential brimming in their LP ‘Are You Afraid of The Danks’ paying homage to the Strokes, taking cues from Phoenix and rasping their voices to the pitch of Cold War Kids. It’s safe, but good. It’s not extraordinary, but it’s adorable. Another adjective they probably weren’t going for. They’ll be at Lee’s Palace Oct. 16th.
