The swealtering heat invading the city today could’ve played to the tune of ‘New York City Heat’ by New York’s Dead Heart Bloom. I listened to this song while beads of sweat collected gracefully on my brows and around the rims of my glasses while I slurped down my jug of water out in my backyard. It was a return to my youth, with the rays aging my skin with each hour’s passing and my reckless abandon for any sort of protection. SPF is for the weak. I just sat there waiting for my first signs of golden bronze, and all I ended up with was a hot mess.

Dead Heart Bloom is one of those bands I thought sounded a lot like Fleet Foxes, or Bon Iver so I threw their song, ‘Flash In A Bottle’ on a mix for my friend and immediately- that song began to circulate. All of their music is available for free download (or for purchase) on their website. Their music has that ethereal hazy sound that spans the spectrum of Radiohead, Fleet Foxes, Phosphorescent and the like. In the song, ‘Impossible New City Dream’ Paul Wood rocking lullaby sways us with, ‘go to sleep, don’t ask the day to repeat’. I extend my deepest gratitude to the band for acknowledging that free music is small joy for us all to celebrate.
